Austin Kitchen Garden: Vegetables to Plant in February

We have made it to February and here in Austin the days are feeling confusing to say the least.  The beauty of gardening here in zone 8b/9 is that it is rare that we CAN’T garden.  We’re not as spoiled as Southern Cali but gifted with almost year-round gardening.

January and February are crucial months to prep for an abundant harvest in the spring. If you wondering how to best prepare for the spring you can read more about my steps here.

So let’s get down to the nitty gritty. First its important to always check you frost dates. The USDA has changed our zone to 9 due to warming temperature patterns.

AUSTIN CENTRAL TEXAS, ZONE 9
-AVERAGE FIRST FROST DATE: November 5
-AVERAGE LAST FROST DATE: February 17

VEGETABLE SEEDS TO START INDOORS

If you are wanting to start your own seeds indoors this month for spring and summer start with:

  • tomatoes

  • peppers

  • eggplant

  • lettuce

  • melons

  • cucumbers. 

Make note of your days-to-harvest to ensure they can be transplanted in the right month.
